A list of things that bring me joy, intrigue me, or I find fascinating.

  • Good wine bars, such as Clever Bottle in Seattle, or Yield in San Francisco
  • Old diesel cars, especially Volvos and Mercedes
  • My iPhone and iPad and mobile digital communication in general. Love being able to be anywhere and communicate with friends I have in Australia, Portugal, and beyond!
  • Venice, Italy ... off the tourist paths. One of my favorite places.
  • Pizza and wood fired ovens
  • My years studying Goju-Kai Karate when I was a teenager
  • Chess
  • Poster art, especially early and mid 20th century travel posters and 1960's rock and rock concert posters
  • Wood block prints
  • Letterpress, both the process and the result
  • San Francisco
  • The Musical Box, the band authorized to do reproductions of the Genesis rock shows from the early 1970's. I'm seen them live more times than any other band.
  • Custer State Park in South Dakota
  • New Orleans, especially the eastern edge of the French Quarter
  • Well kept farms in the upper midwest
  • Old barns in good shape
  • Antique hardware, fixtures, and kitchen gear (especially chopping blocks and knives)
  • Modern furniture
  • Chuck Close paintings
  • Creeks and rivers, especially if there's a short little waterfall involved
  • Record stores, and the smell of old vinyl albums
  • Portland, Oregon
  • Instagram and anything that brings great visuals
  • Blog and web design when done extremely well and clean
  • Cool old buildings like the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Oregon
  • Wood canvas canoes
  • Really good sound, from good speakers, attached to a great amplifier, connected to a high quality turntable
  • Campfires
  • Soccer matches, especially in Europe where the crowd sings
  • Small restaurants
  • Yoga
  • Good wine made by good people
  • Pottery that is useful, functional, original, and beautiful
  • Glazed donuts
  • Grand Marais, Minnesota
  • Playing frisbee with my son
  • Charcuterie and cured meats in general
  • Potato chip factories
  • Blue Mounds State Park in Luverne, Minnesota
  • Sunsets in Pipestone county, Minnesota
  • The magazine and podcast "Lenswork" by Brooks Jensen
  • Rothko and Jasper Johns
  • Agates when found by me on a beach (not heaped in a bin for sale)
  • The offices of writers I admire
  • Wool blankets
  • Photographing with film, especially black and white
  • Medium format photography and my Mamiya RZ67
  • Cats
  • Documentary films
  • Solo travel
  • The area just south and east of Tuscon, Arizona in January, February, and March. Hummingbirds, history, wine, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, great food, and no Minnesota winter weather.
  • The North Shore of Lake Superior
  • Scooters, especially Vespas
